When I told my friends and fans I was recording this album, the first
thing they said was, “I hope you’re singing something from
Henry, Sweet Henry!” Since there is already a wonderful original
cast recording, I hadn’t planned to do so. Then I started remembering
how much I loved playing Gil; working with the incredible cast that included
Carol Bruce and Don Ameche; being guided by the remarkable creative team
of director George Roy Hill and choreographer Michael Bennett (on whom
I had a schoolgirl crush!); and most of all, my favorite songwriter and
beloved mentor, Bob Merrill. It was the show that first put me on the
map—how could I not sing something from it? So thank you, dear friends
(and specially Fred Barton); I’ve taken your advice.
