I was very young when I made my Broadway debut as
Barbara Cook’s daughter in Something More,
but I remember quite a bit about the experience, like Barbara’s thrilling
high Cs and Marilyn Bergman’s French twist. Early on in rehearsals,
I remember telling my Mom that I was concerned because director Jule Styne
had asked me, an 11-yearold, how I thought a scene should be staged! Jule,
who was also the producer, must have felt the same way because the next
day he had replaced himself as director with Joe Layton! I didn’t
remember this song, however, because it was cut before we opened. It resurfaced
in 1970, when Mae West needed a song for the film Myra Breckenridge, but
most of it ended up on the cutting room floor there, too. After Frank Fain
mesmerized Walter with this backstory, he convinced me to give it a try,
on the grounds that if we didn’t like it we could cut it. After hearing
the end result, I wouldn’t cut it for the world!
